STRAIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY | The Stata Center, 2006-2007
Designed by Frank Gehry and completed in 2004, the Stata Center is an eye-catching building, inside and out. Described as a "geek palace" by Wired Magazine, it is an extraordinary jumble of metal, glass, steel and brick. The portfolio was created over a period of two years, and includes images of both interior and exterior spaces; several of the images (this one, for example) were taken from the window of my own office in the building. My aim was to capture the spirit of the building in an extended portrait, especially the mesmerizing light effects created by the shine of its steel facade. The impression of the building is as much conveyed by the way it amasses and bends light as by its physical substance; two images (this one and this one), taken from almost identical vantage points, but at different times of day, show dramatically the effect of changing light.
